New additions coming soon!

So after much research (in part thanks to Aunt Judy and Uncle Jerry) we have decided to increase the Riggs family a bit. It took a little bit to get the hubby in my corner, but after a little begging and pleading he finally agreed. We have decided to purchase a few egg laying hens for the boys. We made some wonderful friends while on a bike ride who shared with us their experiences with their hens. They stated that they are very low maintenance, require little space(though we will probably let them roam the back yard), and create the most wonderfully rich eggs they have ever consumed. This officially sold me on the idea.

I know what you all are thinking, oh Jessica and her animals. The fish, the rabbit, the gecko and now the hens. Though I love animals this ventures main purpose is to teach the boys to respect the food that is brought to the table and the importance of good, whole foods. They will also teach them a bit of responsibility. The boys will be in charge of feeding, watering, and collecting the eggs. The other reason I feel this will be a good venture is that it will be great for our composed bin, especially since we are a little short on leaf debrie.

So we have decided to take on this task at Easter time. The weather will be perfect for chicks and it will give Nathan time to build a hen house. We are lucky, in that since we have new construction around us, good quality scrap wood is easy to find and best of all it is free. We can even find siding and roofing materials. This will keep Nathan busy in the garage for the winter as well (he is always looking for something to build).

I would love it if anyone has any tips or stories to share reguarding their own experiences or facts that will help us transition smoothly.

  1. Awesome!! That is a fantastic idea. Lee and I have always talked about having chickens for the same reason. Good for you and Nathan! I also love your new blog background. It looks great.

  2. Hey Jessica!! I LOVED having chickens growing up.
When I was really litte we had about 20 chickens and a couple of roosters- but you're making a good choice to just get hens. Sometimes the roosters are pretty agressive (and loud! I used to have to bring a broom into the chicken coop to fend off mean Cujo. Even at the house by Irving we had some chickens, just not as many.

I think your boys will really like it and it will teach them lots of things. Plus you're right! Chickens create great additions to your compost bin.

Any tips for you....?? All they really need is chicken feed, sometimes grit, water dispensers, some hay, nesting spots, and voila! They are great composters themselves b/c they'll eat your table scraps (bread, veggies, etc.)

Sorry for the ridiculously long comment, but I love chickens, lol. Where I live they are trying to pass a law that you can have hens in the city limits. I'm hoping it passes, although ordinances never stopped us from having chickens as a kid...

    Have fun!!
